Entebbe, 19th April 2020. Uganda’s leading Volleyball Coach, is advising Volleyballers/Athletes to watch what they eat during the COVID-19 Pandemic lock down.
Tonny Lakony, the KCB-Nkumba Volleyball Coach and also the tactician of the Uganda National Volleyball team Lady Volleyball Cranes has worked with volleyballers from all walks of life. From beginners to elite Volleyballers who have competed on the local scene and at the World stage.
Here are his 4 thoughts on how athletes can make the best use the lockdown.
1. Be responsible and follow the health safety guidelines to avoid contracting and spreading Covid-19.
Ministry of health guidelines:
Wash your hands frequently for 20+ seconds with soap and water
Stay at home and limit contact with others
Routinely clean frequently touched spaces in your home
Seek medical help if you’re suffering from a fever, cough or difficulty breathing
Limit contact with pets and animals
Self-quarantining and social distancing is the best protocol you can follow at this point, especially since many areas are enforcing lockdowns and shelter in place orders.
Stay clean, wash your hands, avoid touching your face and disinfect high-traffic areas around your home as often as you can.
Don’t go to crowded areas
Don’t touch your face
Don’t be in close contact with others
Don’t ignore symptoms
Don’t leave your home, especially if sick
Avoid mingling with others, touching your face often and leaving your home, especially if you’re showing any cold/flu/COVID-19 symptoms.
2. Work out.. Stay fit.
Full body workouts and you can do that from the comfort of your room. For example, push-ups, abdominal crunches, lunges, step-up-on chair, high knees running on the spot, squats, wall sit, push-up rotation, side-planks, planks….
Advice “concentrate on your weaknesses” every athlete knows what they need, work on it!
3. Read and keep your mind sharp.
Students, read their books..of course. Luckily they already have the subject outline that’s for one.
Well as for the others.. You can read books in line with your career outside sports, can also read volleyball books, inspiration books/stories by successful athletes and managers and watch videos of the same.
Carbohydrates are energy giving foods and proteins are bodybuilding foods, while vitamins and minerals are protective foods that guard the body against infections.
4. Watch what you eat. “You eat like a pig and drink like a fish” you will turn into one!
No one knows when the Virus will be defeated, eat healthy, workout and stay healthy.
